In Inkscape version 1.2.1 and above, it appears that the default view mode is Wide Screen mode, which puts the Commands Bar on the right side of the screen:

At the bottom of the View menu, you can find the option to turn Wide Screen mode on/off:

Turning off Wide Screen mode puts the Commands Bar at the top of the screen, which is similar to the layout I use throughout the course:
